Summertime..

Bit quiet in here last month, sorry for that. Summertime in Amsterdam can do that to you. Been working, spending time with friends and family, dj-ing a bit (guesting at Wicked Jazz Sounds was fire! Big up to Phil, Manne, Leroy and crew) and soaking up a lot of live music.

Anyway, for those who have not yet checked out Janelle Monae‘s fantastic album The ArchAndroid, just wanna urge you to do so. Twenty-first century soul music hasn’t sounded this fresh, diverse and addictive in a loooong time. Also if you don’t consider yourself a soul music fan, but just are into good music in general, don’t miss out! From cinematic orchestral pieces, folky dreamy pop songs, punky soul to futuristic afro funk, Janelle lays it down.

Above is one of my favorites (apart from the obvious instant classic Tightrope), featuring the kind of forgotten spoken word artist Saul Williams. Dope, pure and uncut.

Now it’s time i head on over to Amsterdam’s only free hip-hop festival in a park Appelsap – 10 Years featuring my man Rich Medina, Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, La Melodia, The Clipse etc..

Rocking With Rich

If you’re anywhere near Shanghai, come check my good friend Rich Medina gracing the decks at The Shelter this Friday. For those that don’t know, Rich is one of the world’s top dj’s when it comes to playing a mix of funk & soul, afrobeat, hip-hop, deep house and more.

Among many other things: he’s been holding down a 8 year weekly (yes, that is WEEKLY) residence at New York’s hotspot APT (Lil Ricky’s Ribshack), did a weekly party with none other than Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip over the past year and is the mastermind behind the hugely popular Jump ‘n’ Funk Afrobeat parties in NYC and beyond. He’s also travelled to most corners of the world to lay his funk on the masses. Oh and he’s a spoken word artist and producer too.

Support by The Lab dj’s and yours truly.

Update!

09-HeadphonSepia
I’m still here. No worries.

What has kept me from posting? I dont know. No good excuses, really. But here’s what i HAVE been doing:

  • Made a remix for Amsterdam songstress and longtime friend Giovanca. My extremely laidback remake of her cool song “On My Way” will be included on the upcoming collector’s edition cd of her debut album Subway Silence (Out: 23 October).
  • DJ-ed in Singapore at end party of Spikes Asia, the first pan-Asian advertising awards festival
  • Made a tune for the new website of my girlfriend’s clothing brand Spoom as well as shot and edited two ‘making of’ videos for them
  • Working on a track for upcoming cd of Dutch comedian Howard Komproe “HowardFM”
  • Promoted a 5-song EP plus 2 remixes (Alif Tree & Aaron Jerome) by Mr.Windmill & me to labels, dj’s and radio. Lots of nice feedback. This EP will get a digital release soon.
  • Mixed all vocals for 9 songs on the upcoming album “Goddess” of California/Atlanta singer Nonameko (Sole Profit‘s wife). Buy the cd or mp3s here
  • Re-doing a track with Swedish singer Cecilia Stalín (with whom Mr.Windmill & I previously recorded Summer Dresses)
  • I promise i’ll be back with a free download type post soon!

If u’re in Shanghai, catch me dj-ing @ Barbarossa every Tuesday and @ The Shelter this Friday, October 2.

    peace
